At EFYTAL, our goal is to create meaningful keepsake jewelry that you and your loved ones will cherish for years to come. That’s why we take the time to carefully select our materials and work to keep our prices reasonable without sacrificing quality. We believe that everyone should have access to meaningful jewelry that they can be proud to give as gifts! Our three metal offerings, 925 Sterling Silver, 14K Gold Filled, and 14K Gold Plated, are distinct from each other in look and composition while meeting our high standards.
925 Sterling Silver
925 Sterling Silver is named for the percentage of fine silver (92.5% by weight) that is alloyed with another metal to improve hardness and durability. 925 Sterling Silver is stamped with “925;” in the United States, anything with a lower percentage of silver is not considered Sterling Silver, and therefore cannot be hallmarked as such. Checking for the 925 stamp is a simple way to ensure you’re purchasing high quality Sterling Silver, which is hypoallergenic and will never rub off on your skin.
Sterling Silver is durable, but it’s still important to treat it with care in order to maximize its longevity and keep it beautiful for years to come. Sterling Silver does tarnish but it is easy to clean with a quick swipe of a polishing cloth.
14K Gold Filled
14K Gold Filled jewelry is created when sheets of gold are bonded to the outside of a core metal, such as brass, using intense heat and pressure. By law, Gold Filled jewelry must contain at least 5% gold by weight. The combination of thicker gold and strong bonding results in a durable piece that, with proper care, can last just as long as a solid gold one (while also being more affordable).
14K Gold Filled jewelry is an incredible option for a keepsake piece that can be passed down through the years. To keep it in great condition, follow our care guide. If a piece needs to be cleaned, you can soak it in warm water for a few minutes with a couple drops of dish soap, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth.
14K Gold Plated
14K Gold Plated jewelry is created via a process in which a core metal (we use brass) is bonded with a layer of gold. The gold used in plating is the same as in solid gold jewelry, so it follows the typical purity scale; the gold we plate with, for example, is 14K.
The main determinant in terms of the longevity of a gold plated piece is the thickness of the gold coating. While the standard for gold plated jewelry is only .5 microns, we plate with double that thickness, 1 micron. This means that our 14k Gold Plated jewelry will withstand twice as much wear as any piece plated with the standard thickness of gold, making it an excellent and affordable purchase for yourself or for a loved one.
To care for 14K Gold Plated pieces, follow our typical care steps- remember to keep your jewelry away from any products that contain alcohol (perfumes, sunscreens, lotions) and always store it in a safe place where it won’t rub on anything. When necessary, you can clean your piece with warm water and soap. These easy steps will keep your jewelry sparkling for years to come!
As always, we’re happy to help: if you have any questions or concerns about your piece, please feel free to email us at CustomerLove@EFYTAL.com or reach out via Facebook or Instagram. We always love to chat with you about all things jewelry!
